A new, one-stop shop for home décor, antiques and furnishings has come to Jamestown in the form of Calamity Janes: Second Time Around Shoppe.
The store, which is located next to the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Business Loop West in Jamestown, opened in early May to customers looking to get what shop owner Sharri Besednik called, “nice things but not at outrageous prices.”
While not a consignment store, Besednik said her shop offers a collection of home décor items, antiques and furnishings — some of which she has repurposed herself.
“It’s a big conglomeration of old and new,” she said. “I get things at auctions, rummage sales, flea markets and such and I just really love turning them into something people can put in their homes to enjoy for a long time.”
Besednik said she would describe the items in the store as “shabby chic” as well as “rustic and feminine.”
A passion of hers since a young age, Besednik said that painting, refinishing and resurfacing old items to give them a new look is something she’s “addicted to.”
“I’ve tried to do a lot of research with decorating magazines and so forth and I really enjoy it,” she said. “Customers have so many different tastes so we try to appeal to everybody here.”
Besednik purchased the store in March and took about two months to have the shop set up to her liking.
“It’s amazing what a little color and carpeting have done to brighten up the place,” she said.
The Business Loop West location across the street from Goodwill and adjacent to the Salvation Army Thrift Store is something Besednik sees as a great benefit to the community.
“All three of us work together pretty well, each offering up our own style for customers to choose from within a pretty close area,” she said. “Location is just so important and I think it’s important that people in Jamestown support their local businesses.”
The store has received positive marks already, according to Besednik.
“People have been coming in these past three weeks and just been so excited,” she said. “One woman made the remark ‘Jamestown really needs a store like this.’”
As for why the name “Calamity Janes,” the shop owner said, “It just fits the store perfectly — people love the name!”
Calamity Janes is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sundays.
For more information, Besednik encourages anyone to come in and check out her collection during business hours or call her directly at 701-368-1228.
