The East Region dominated the opening round of the Class A state baseball tournament Thursday at Mandan Memorial Ballpark. The East outscored its counterparts 20-3 including three shutouts.
Fargo Davies opened the day with a 2-0 win over Dickinson thanks to a one-hit shutout from Casey Quinlan. FD scored once in the fourth and once in the seventh for its total. Dickinson’s Mason Schiff took the loss, despite allowing just four hits.
Fargo Shanley continued the dominance with a 1-0 win over Bismarck High. Nick Salentine fired a five-hitter in the win, which saw Shanley get its only run in the second inning. Bismarck’s Andrew Dill took the loss, though he and reliever Tyler Richter combined to allow just five hits.
West Fargo throttled Bismarck St. Mary’s 10-0 in five innings to advance. Andy Young’s three-hit shutout paved the way for the Packers, who led 7-0 after the first two innings and ended the game with three in the bottom of the fifth. Trent Bohan was dealt the loss for St. Mary’s.
Wahpeton rallied past Williston 7-3 with the help of three runs in the top of the seventh. Tyler Gripentrog got the win. Williston reliever Oliver Sogard suffered the loss.
Dickinson meets Bismarck High at 11:30 a.m. today and St. Mary’s plays Williston 35 minutes after in consolation-round action.
Davies plays Shanley at 4:30 p.m. in the first semifinal, while West Fargo and Wahpeton will meet 35 minutes after in the final game of the day.
