Music in the park originated during the summer of 1996. In 2009, the City Park Band Shell was flooded and declared structurally unsafe. The Bridges Arts Council was instrumental in contacting the Barnes County Courthouse as a new location so summer outdoor entertainment could be continued.
This year’s programs will kick off at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday with Kroshus & Krew from Wahpeton. Tilford Kroshus, originally from Valley City, and his band said they enjoy coming back each year to share their music. They perform a popular blend of tunes from the ’40s to the present.
On June 13, Kathie Brekke & the Dixieland Band from Fargo will bring a large variety of music to the evening. She is an established pianist, vocalist, entertainer, teacher, director, worship leader and promoter around the region. The Dixieland Band is a regular at Jaspers Theatre in Park Rapids, Minn. The band features Brekke’s son on the fiddle.
“We really do appreciate all those who so willingly share their talents with us,” said Diane Sommerfeld, Valley City Park District. “Each year we have been very fortunate to have such a great variety of talented groups join us and of course, we are always looking for ... new participants. Also, it has worked out well using the courthouse lawn the last few years. It still provides us with the outdoor atmosphere.”
Music on the Courthouse Lawn is co-sponsored by Dakota Country-KOVC and the Valley City Park District as well as several sponsors in the community. Various businesses and local organizations can also sponsor an evening by sharing goodies which have included ice cream, popcorn, lemonade, picnic suppers, etc.
The band shell has been without entertainment since 2009.
“There are people who are interested in saving the band shell,” Sommerfeld said. “We need everyone’s help to make this happen. If there are any groups, organizations or individuals who would like to sponsor a fundraiser Wednesday evenings prior to the programs, let us know.”
There are still dates available for this summer for entertainment for Music on the Courthouse Lawn. Interested individuals or groups may contact Sommerfeld at 701-845-3294.
