FARGO — A Fargo man accused of rape Saturday allegedly grabbed a 16-year-old girl by the wrist and forced himself on her outside a local business center, according to a police report filed today with the criminal charges.
Bashir Abdi Noor, 26, is charged with gross sexual imposition, a Class AA felony. If convicted, Noor would face a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and registration as a sex offender.
A jail official said no bond has been set, pending a court appearance. The assistant state’s attorney prosecuting the case could not be reached for comment Monday.
According to the police report, Noor approached the girl after 4 p.m. Saturday near the Somali Business Center at 122 23rd St. Police say they don’t think he knew her, but are still investigating any connections.
He allegedly pulled her into a concealed area between the fence and the building and sexually assaulted her there.
The girl escaped and alerted others, who chased Noor, police say. He was arrested a block away.
The police report said DNA evidence appeared to be present.
Lt. Joel Vettel wouldn’t confirm whether such evidence had been collected, though he said it’s typically standard procedure in such cases.
The girl was taken to the hospital. Police say she did not sustain serious injuries beyond the assault.
