UND team in Alaska to capture rare Venus transit
A University of North Dakota astronomy team has travelled to Alaska to capture Tuesday's rare event of Venus passing between the Earth and the sun.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A University of North Dakota astronomy team has travelled to Alaska to capture Tuesday's rare event of Venus passing between the Earth and the sun.
School officials say the UND duo of Tim Young and Ron Marsh will have several telescopes set up with special sun viewing filters to Webcast the once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. The next time that a Venus transit will be visible from Earth is 2115.
Two weeks ago observers from UND captured a rare annular solar eclipse.
The Venus Webcast, which will include a live chat room, is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. The cast can be found at www.sems.und.edu.
