Wind was the big winner on Day 1 of the Class A state golf meet.
The wind howled and pushed scores up at Dickinson’s 6,748-yard, par 72 Heart River Golf Course.
The tough conditions messed with the Blue Jays two youngsters who qualified for the tournament as eighth-grader Austin Rene finished with an 89 and sophomore Jakobi Lux a 95.
“Wind was certainly a factor today,” JHS coach Dean Kraft said. “It takes what you’ve put together as a plan to attack the course and you basically throw that out the window.
“My guys struggled a lot with club selection and selecting their aim points. You can hit what you think are good shots only to have them so wind affected they just don’t turn out the way you had envisioned.”
Rene was OK tee to green, but struggled putting and around the greens.
“Today was a day where you are going to miss a lot of greens and have to rely on your short game,” Kraft said. “Austin just couldn’t seem to get that aspect of his game going. He’s been so sharp with his short game so hopefully he can turn that around tomorrow.”
Lux had a better second nine after a shaky start.
“Good mental toughness when things went as poorly as they did on the front. He did a good job on letting the first nine go and started fresh on his second nine,” Kraft said of Lux.
West Fargo enters the second and final round with a seven-shot lead over Fargo Shanley for the team title.
Riley Johnson of West Fargo fired an even-par 72, giving him a two-stroke edge over Ty Kennedy of Grand Forks Central.
