A rough second inning put Jamestown Post 14 behind the 8-ball in their American Legion baseball opener on Wednesday in West Fargo.

West Fargo scored four runs in the second, eventually winning 5-0. It picked up a sweep with a dominant 14-0 win in five innings in night-cap action.

Jamestown coach Shane Schoeneberg said he liked the way his kids battled in the opener against West Fargo’s Tanner Doll, who just finished his freshman season at a junior college in Oklahoma.

“This kid is a pretty good pitcher,” Schoeneberg said. “It was just needing one more big hit. A couple times we had guys in scoring positions. We were one hit away.”

Jamestown’s Riley Schafer pitched into the fifth inning and took the loss, though West Fargo totaled only three hits in the game.

“Riley threw pretty well,” Schoeneberg said. “It was a battle of the freebies. He walked a few too many guys and hit a few guys. (We were) getting into passed ball situations.”

Jamestown had six hits, led by Kasey Gengler’s 2-for-3 performance. Tyler Ukestad, Jake Stilwell and Brady Anderson also had a hit.

Schoeneberg said he was happy with the team’s baserunning.

“I was proud of the guys as far as stealing some bases today,” he said. “I think we had two or three in that first game and we were able to get some pretty good jumps. I’m really stressing that this year — turning singles into doubles.”

The second game saw West Fargo score 11 runs in the first inning, dealing Anderson a loss on the hill. West Fargo’s Andy Young had a two-run homer to help key the big inning.

West Fargo starting pitcher Landon Uetz’s only hit allowed was a single to Stilwell.
