Produce donations sought from ND gardeners

North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is calling on gardeners and produce growers to help feed the hungry.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is calling on gardeners and produce growers to help feed the hungry.

Goehring says the goal for the Hunger Free North Dakota Garden Project this year is 500,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. That would match the total amount generated during the first two years of the effort.

The project encourages both home gardeners and commercial growers to plant extra produce each year and donate it to charitable groups around the state. Goehring says one in nine North Dakotans seeks food assistance each year. He says even in a state that produces so much food for the world, people still go hungry
