The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office is reporting an increase in phone scams over the past two weeks, according to Sheriff Chad Kaiser.

Kaiser reported three cases in the past two weeks and all have been generally the same.

A elderly person receives a phone call claiming to be from a grandson or granddaughter. The caller claims to be in the hospital and asks for $2,500 cash to be wired to them.

“I don’t even know anywhere where you need to get money wired to you to receive medical attention,” Kaiser said.

The caller then asks the elderly person on the other line to tell no one about this call.

Kaiser said that’s when people should be aware something is fishy.

Callers often blame the different-sounding voice on a broken nose, he said.

Kaiser said to check with relatives of who is supposedly calling to confirm their whereabouts. He also said people should be suspicious when receiving a call to ask for a money wire.
