A cannon’s blast will be heard from Fort Seward tonight. Members of the 20th Infantry Reenacted will demonstrate the drills associated with firing the 12-pound mountain howitzer.

The gun was the common field artillery piece used on the frontier during the American Indian War period.

The demonstration will include the steps taken to load the weapon and fire a round and be presented by a gun crew in authentic military attire of the 1870s. They will fire a blank round.

The demonstration will be held at 7 p.m. at the Fort Seward grounds. The presentation is part of a series of history chats held at the fort every Wednesday through the summer. Admission is free.
