Tansy Wells, a junior at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., is taking part in the Summer School Abroad program. This summer there are nine Summer School Abroad opportunities offered through the Global Education Office at Concordia.

Wells is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Wells, Jamestown.

Wells is in “The Ethnographic Essay: Cultural Immersion in Scotland” program led by Dr. Karla Knutson, assistant professor, English, and Dr. Andrew Lindner, assistant professor, sociology.

In this immersion course, students will learn the skills of ethnography experientially, observing and interviewing in urban and rural communities throughout Scotland. They’ll explore Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands, including the Isle of Skye, and Glasgow. Living in loft apartments in Glasgow, each student will conduct her/his own ethnographic study of a coffee shop, a bus line, a religious community, a bookstore, a working farm and more. Students will become deeply immersed in the culture of Scotland, seeing the country through the eyes of its residents.

Summer School Abroad classes allow students to thoroughly explore a subject while experiencing a daily, up-close view of another culture. These programs are an immersive adventure where faculty and students study a Concordia course in an abroad setting, supplementing classroom content with experiential learning.
