Farmers Union applauds Senate

North Dakota Farmers Union applauded the efforts of the U.S. Senate Thursday after the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 passed.

“This is an important first step in securing a strong safety net and risk management protection for familyfarmers and ranchers,” President Elwood “Woody” Barth said.

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson agreed.

“We are pleased that the Senate was able to come together in a bipartisan manner to pass the 2012 Farm Bill, which is such a vital piece of legislation for family farmers and ranchers across the country,” Johnson said. “We appreciate the hard work of the leadership of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, as well as the hard work of everyone in the full Senate.

“We look forward to working with members of the U.S. House of Representatives to get a farm bill passed, and then working with both chambers of Congress through a conference committee to complete a bill by the time the current farm bill expires on Sept. 30.”
