Jaeger approves smoking measure language

North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger has approved petition language for a ballot initiative that aims to ban smoking in all indoor workplaces, including bars.

BISMARCK (AP) β€” North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger has approved petition language for a ballot initiative that aims to ban smoking in all indoor workplaces, including bars.

The measure, under the petition title, would amend North Dakota law β€œto prohibit smoking, including the use of electronic smoking devices, in public places and most places of employment in this state, including certain outdoor areas.”

Smoke-Free North Dakota needs to turn in petitions with at least 13,452 signatures from North Dakota voters by midnight Aug. 8 to have a chance at getting it on the ballot.

It would prohibit smoking in bars and other indoor workplaces where state law now allows smoking, including tobacco shops, private nursing-home rooms, taxis and motel rooms that are now reserved for smokers.
