Jamestown man sentenced on charges

A 52-year-old Jamestown man was sentenced on a charge of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and revocation of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon said David C. Werkhoven pleaded guilty on April 3 to possessing eight rounds of Federal brand 20-gauge shotgun ammunition when he had previously been convicted of possession of firearms by a convicted felon and possession of firearms by an unlawful user of controlled substance on March 3, 2006, in U.S. District Court, District of North Dakota, both felonies.

On Jan. 3, 2012, while Werkhoven was on supervised release, a member of U.S. Probation Office for the District of North Dakota, along with a law enforcement officer, conducted a supervision search at Werkhoven’s residence.

During the search, eight rounds of 20-gauge Federal brand ammunition were found in Werkhoven’s garage.

U.S. District Judge Ralph R. Erickson sentenced Werkhoven to a total of 54 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Werkhoven was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim's Fund.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Janice M. Morley prosecuted the case.
