Travis Hafner appears close to returning to the diamond.
The Cleveland Indians designated hitter will begin a minor-league rehab stint today with the Columbus (Ohio) Clippers, Cleveland’s Triple A team.
Hafner, a Sykeston, N.D., native, has been sidelined since May 24 and underwent surgery on his right knee on May 31. He had experienced fraying and irritation in his meniscus, although he was unsure what caused the injury. It was his sixth trip to the disabled list in the last five years.
In a series of text messages to the Jamestown Sun’s Mark McKenzie, Hafner said he’s excited to return.
“(I) start playing games (today), so hopefully (I’ll) be back in a few days,” he wrote.
Hafner is hitting .242 with six home runs and 23 runs batted in. He led the team in walks (26) when he went down and his .380 on-base percentage is still tops on the Indians.
Cleveland (37-36) has battled through injuries to several key players, but remain in the thick of things in the muddled, and mediocre, American League Central. The Indians enter play today just 1 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox.
“(I’m) anxious to get back. It should be a good race all summer,” he wrote.
The 35-year-old Hafner is in the final year of his 4-year, $57 million dollar contract.
