Heat being blamed for fish deaths in the Dakotas
Dead fish are surfacing in some lakes and rivers in the Dakotas, and officials say the recent hot weather might be to blame.
LAMOURE, N.D. (AP) — Dead fish are surfacing in some lakes and rivers in the Dakotas, and officials say the recent hot weather might be to blame.
KVLY-TV reports that there are hundreds of dead fish in the James River in southeastern North Dakota, many of them large northern pike. The state Game and Fish Department says northerns can't survive in warm water.
KSFY-TV reports that dead northerns also are being found at Lake John and Lake Norden in northeastern South Dakota, along with dead walleye and perch. Officials there also are blaming the heat and low water levels.
