Talk about it

If you’re staying in Jamestown this weekend, and you like sports, there is no reason to be bored.

We like slow weekends in this department because they are few and far between, but variety is always good and there is plenty of it here the next few days.

So if you can hack the miserable heat, get out and enjoy some of it.

r Baseball

Post 14’s annual summer tournament begins Friday morning and will go until Sunday afternoon with 11 games on the docket. This tournament is not what it used to be, still Jamestown has a competitive team this summer and there are about a million worse things in the world than watching baseball in July at timeless Jack Brown Stadium. The championship game will be played around 3 p.m. on Sunday.

r Racing

It’s still too early to say the racing season is winding down, but after Saturday night’s show at the speedway, only four dates remain before September. There’s plenty on the line points-wise, especially in the Bombers and Midwest Modified classes where the top two spots in each are separated by only three points. This is the week racing begins at 6 p.m., so don’t get there late.

r Football

Granted the games aren’t in Jamestown, but a slew of area kids will be playing in the Shrine Bowl Saturday at Fargo Shanley. Twenty area players will be playing in the games. Complete rosters can be found in the scoreboard on Page B3. It’s not too early to get into football mode. The Jimmies start practice in early August and the high school teams follow shortly after. There are 9-man games on Aug. 21, which seems scarily early, but is true.

r Golf

The North Dakota State Stroke Play Women’s Golf Tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Hillcrest. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Former Jamestown High School star Laura Kraft, who won three state titles for the Blue Jays from 2008-2010, is the defending champion. Kraft played in three meets in her freshman season at the University of Missouri, which moves to the SEC from the Big 12 beginning this fall.

r Rodeo

The James River Rodeo will hold its main event of the year at 6:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the rodeo grounds on the Stutsman County Fairgrounds. Competitors from across the region will participate in a variety of events that further adds to the eclectic feel of the weekend.

r North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame only has inductions every two years, so it’s always a unique event. But considering the star-studded lineup this year, it’s almost a can’t miss. Two impactful major leaguers — Darin Erstad and Rick Helling — will share the stage with legendary boys basketball coach Ed Beyer. There’s a silent auction with lots of good stuff available — read tomorrow’s Opinion Corner for more on that — plus I’m sure good guys Helling and Erstad will sign an item or two if you so desire.

So you got baseball, racing, golf, football, rodeo and a trio of Hall of Famers all at your disposal — for little Jamestown, N.D., that ain’t too bad.
