The offense took off early, but Jamestown Post 14 didn’t need much with Kasey Gengler in control.

Gengler, who played at Northern State (S.D.) last spring, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a pair of hits, and Post 14 exploded for eight runs in the first inning, but cooled off in an 8-0 win over Groton, S.D., in the second game of the Post 14 Invitational Friday at Jack Brown Stadium.

With an aggressive Groton squad, Genger needed just 52 pitches to complete the shutout. He retired eight in a row at one point.

“That’s effective, I guess,” Gengler said. “They were aggressive, and I pounded the zone.”

He issued one walk, hit one and made it through without striking out a batter. Jamestown had just one error in the field.

“He was very effective,” Jamestown coach Shane Schoeneberg said. “When our guys are pitching to contact, our defense stays a lot more into the game.”

He received plenty of help in the bottom half of the first, when Jamestown sent 13 batters to the plate off Groton starter Austin Fordham. Leadoff Riley Schafer went to bat twice, singling and scoring both times.

The inning was highlighted by two-run singles from Joey Gebhardt, Schafer and Brady Anderson.

“I was glad to get those runs in the first,” Gengler said. “We would have liked to have gotten more.”

In addition to Schafer, Gengler also had two hits. Jamestown was the beneficiary of five walks and two hit batsmen.

“It’s very encouraging to see us putting up runs, especially getting into the latter part of the season,” Schoeneberg said.

Schoeneberg said Schafer has settled in after moving up to the top of the lineup, which dropped lefty Danny Fischer to the second spot.

“He really likes it, and Danny as a two-hitter, he likes that,” Schoeneberg said. “Riley’s really been excited about the challenge, and it’s been nice having Danny at No. 2. He hits so well as far as bunting and stuff goes.”

Groton replaced Fordham with Jamie Jorgenson in the first inning. Jorgenson surrendered two of Fordham’s runs, but got out of the inning. He pitched the second, walking and hitting a batter without allowing a hit. Drew Planteen took over in the third and went the rest of the way, giving up just a single, double and a walk in the final four innings.

Jamestown Post 14 7, Beulah 6

A sixth-inning rally gave Jamestown its second win of the day.

Trailing Beulah 5-3, Ben Walz singled to start a four-run inning for Post 14, which got RBI singles from Nick Fuchs and Kasey Gengler. Brady Anderson also drew a walk to bring in a run in the two-out rally.

Schafer had a game-high three hits, scoring three runs and also picking up the win on the hill. He gave up five earned runs, but did log eight strikeouts.

Beulah came within one run in the bottom of the seventh after Patrick Becker’s solo shot over the right-center field wall. Dalton Oliger had a two-out single to extend the inning, but Schafer coaxed a ground out to second base to end the game. The Cyclones also got a home run from Evan Mellmer in the sixth to go up 5-3.

Becker had two hits to lead Beulah, which finished 0-2 on the day. Trevor Zacher went all six innings in the loss.

Fargo Metro Expos 10, Beulah 0, 5 innings

FM pitcher Eric Peterson fired a no-hitter at Beulah, facing just one over the minimum. His only blemish was a second-inning walk to Beulah No. 6 hitter Mark Muscha. Peterson finished with seven strikeouts including the side in the top of the first inning.

Michael Nemer did most of the damage for the Expos out of the five-hole, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs including a two-run single in the fourth inning that put FM up 7-0.

FM leadoff Pat Murphy scored on a Nate Rasmus sacrifice fly to left field to end the game by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth.

Beulah starter Cody Nelson struggled early in the loss, though he wasn’t helped out much by the Cyclones’ five errors.

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 6, Fargo Metro Expos 2

Devlin Gavigan-Hosaluk went the distance, allowing one earned run on four hits as Saskatoon topped the Expos in its first game of the tournament.

Saskatoon and FM each scored a run in the first inning, but the former kept the pressure on with two more runs in the third. Brayden Resch reached on a single and scored on an error while Jake Hersikorn scored on a Braden Bessel double. Resch homered in the fifth to help nail down the win.

Zach Kellen lasted until the fifth, eventually taking the loss for the Expos, who got a run scored and a walk from Eric Peterson.
