Jamestown schools begin classes Aug. 22

Jamestown Public Schools will open with full sessions on Aug. 22 at the following times. Elementary grades 1-5 begins at 8:30 a.m., grades 6-8 begins at 8:30 a.m. and grades 9-12 at 8:47 a.m. Kindergarten students will be assessed on Aug. 22 and 23 and a schedule will be sent to parents.

Jamestown Public Schools will open with full sessions on Aug. 22 at the following times. Elementary grades 1-5 begins at 8:30 a.m., grades 6-8 begins at 8:30 a.m. and grades 9-12 at 8:47 a.m. Kindergarten students will be assessed on Aug. 22 and 23 and a schedule will be sent to parents. The first day of school for kindergarten students will be Aug. 24. All high school students with an “early bird” 7:50 a.m. class either at the high schhool or the James Valley Career and Technology Center will report to their homerooms at the high school at 8:47 a.m. on the first day of school.

Dismissal time at the JHS is 3:08 p.m., Jamestown Middle School at 3:10 p.m. and the elementary schools will be dismissed at 3 p.m. Parents who have children who will be attending kindergarten are asked to transport their children the first two days of school so that necessary arrangements can be made for the students requesting transportation service.

There will be no school on Aug. 27 for teachers to attend professional development workshops. School will resume on Aug. 28.

JMS and JHS schedules: The following dates have been set aside for students to pick up their schedules:

Aug. 15: grades 6, 7, and 8 at the JMS, grades 10 and 12 at JHS.

Aug. 16: grades 6, 7, and 8 at JMS, grades 9 and 11 at JHS.

All consumable materials are purchased by patrons. Textbooks for grades K-12 will be distributed in the students’ regular classroom the first day of school.

Registration: Middle school and high school students who are new to the district may register by calling the middle school office at 252-0317 or high school office at 952-4003 for an appointment to complete the necessary paperwork. Kindergarten and elementary students new to the school district may register at the proper grade school building on Aug. 14. Hours for registration are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Fees: Registration for bus service, food service, and activity fees and tickets will be from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Aug. 15 and 16 in the middle school cafeteria, 203 Second Ave. SE, and in the high school commons area at 1509 10th Ave. NE, and in the middle school cafeteria only on Aug. 17.

Transportation: Bus service is provided for the rural public school area students by the school district at no cost. Rural private school students may be transported if space is available. When available, intracity transportation is limited to those students who live 10 blocks or more from school. The cost for a family is $90 per semester per child for the first two children, $75 per semester for each additional family member attending school in grades K-12. Rural students wishing transportation service must also register on the above dates.

School lunch: School lunches and breakfasts are available for all students in Jamestown Public Schools. A family might be eligible for free or reduced meal prices. The school district encourages all families to complete the free or reduced meal application which is mailed to each family the second week of August. Anyone who does not receive an application should call Shelley Mack, food service director, 952-3015. The elementary student cost is $2.15 per day, the middle school student cost is $2.25 per day and the high school student cost is $2.35 per day. The adult cost is $3 per day.

Breakfast programs are available at all schools. The elementary cost is $1.45 per day. The JMS and JHS cost is $1.65 per day. The adult cost is $2.15 per day. The school lunch program is supported by the charge made to patrons for meals and by the subsidy received from federal sources through the State Lunch Program.
