Bobby Smith was a tough out for Jamestown Post 14 on Friday.
The Coon Rapids, Minn., shortstop, hitting out of the two-hole, ran out two bunt singles in a 12-3 win over Jamestown at Jack Brown Stadium.
Smith, who will continue his baseball career at Jamestown College next month, finished with two runs scored.
“I really like how he plays the game,” Jamestown College Tom Hager said. “We like to play small ball. It’s fun to see him do that with the Coon Rapids team.
“We knew he was fundamentally sound and today reiterates that.”
Trailing 2-0 in the second, Jamestown responded with two runs that started when Jake Stilwell reached on a two-base error in right field. A second error allowed Ben Walz to get to first and scored Stilwell. Walz scored when Joey Gebhardt reached on Coon Rapids’ third error of the inning two batters later.
But Coon Rapids fired back with a four-run third that put the two-time defending champions of the 88-team Gopher Classic in Minnesota ahead for good. Coon Rapids boasts a roster with nine players signed or commited to college baseball including University of Florida commit Logan Shore, a standout pitcher.
The power came from Coon Rapids cleanup hitter Alex Wojociechowski, who belted two home runs including a three-run bomb in the fourth inning that staked his team a 9-3 advantage. Wojociechowski has signed with Minnesota-Duluth.
Coon Rapids pitcher Nick Hanzlik picked up the win, surrending one earned run over four innings.
Jamestown got its third run on Brady Anderson’s team-leading third homer of the season, a shot well over the right-field fence. Anderson also took the pitching loss, however, giving up seven earned runs in five innings.
Jamestown is back in action on Sunday when Post 14 hosts Williston for a league doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. at Jack Brown Stadium.
