Weekend of a lifetime: Rosenau excited for all-star experience

As much as Sierra Rosenau enjoys throwing the javelin, she loves basketball even more.
But the Carrington High School graduate chose to throw javelin at North Dakota State University over playing basketball at Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead, Jamestown College and Valley City State.
“North Dakota State and track and field were a better fit for me,” she said. “It was hard not choosing basketball.”
Rosenau, who also turned down track and field opportunities at the University of Minnesota and the University of North Dakota, gets one last chance to play organized hoops when she participates in the Lions All-Star Series, scheduled for today at the Bismarck Civic Center and Wednesday at the Fargo Civic Center.
The annual series pits North Dakota’s best from Class A’s graduated class against Class B’s top graduates in both boys and girls games. The girls game is set for 6 p.m., and the boys contest is slated to follow at around 8 p.m.
Rosenau said she’s been looking forward to playing in the all-star games.
“To play with the best in the state, and even play against them is an amazing honor,” Rosenau said. “I have friends who have been in it and they’ve gotten a lot of memories out of it. It’s the weekend of a lifetime.”
She wasn’t as fortunate her senior year as she was her junior year, when Carrington rode a tough schedule all the way to the state championship game where it defeated Central Cass on the same floor it plays on tonight.
“That is easily the biggest accomplishment I’ve ever had as an athlete,” Rosenau said. “It’s pretty much a daily thought. I just wish I could go back and repeat it again.”
The Cardinals didn’t fare as well her senior year, despite having most of the team back. They lost to Midkota in the semifinals of the Region 4 tournament.
Still, Rosenau doesn’t spend much time thinking about that.
“It didn’t end the way we wanted, but I couldn’t be more proud of my team,” she said.
The memories for Rosenau — the state’s Class B senior athlete of the year — put basketball at the forefront of her favorite activities, which is why she struggled to give up hoops when choosing the next stage of her life.
“I know when I come home and watch high school games, it’ll be tough not being on the court with them,” Rosenau said. “In high school, it was my life. I’d kind of like to suit up again next season, but unfortunately that’s over for me. It was a fun run.”
Instead, Rosenau will take to the field, where she’ll still hope to avoid going over a foul line. The two-time Class B state champion javelin thrower has done a pretty good job of that already.
“I think track and NDSU will be a very good opportunity for me, and I’m excited for that. The coaches there are awesome and easy to get along with,” Rosenau said. “I won’t be as busy and it’s still a college sport, so it’ll be fun.”
