FARGO — North Dakota State has set an Aug. 15 fundraising deadline if the construction process is going to commence on the Bison Sports Arena renovation this fall.
The athletic department remains around $2 million short of its $32 million goal needed to begin the remodel.
Athletic director Gene Taylor said that a self-imposed deadline is necessary so the university can approach the state Board of Higher Education and the North Dakota legislature for approval. The final month both governing bodies will look at them this year is in September, “so we need to have everything in place before that,” Taylor said.
The first phase, the $5 million Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field facility, is expected to be completed this fall.
If NDSU doesn’t reach the remaining $2 million needed, construction may have to be put off until next spring.
USA Wrestling at dome for another three years
NDSU and USA Wrestling signed another three-year contract to host the annual summer tournament at the Fargodome. Terms and conditions have not changed much over the years with the exception of the cost, which went up this year because of food and housing.
The athletic department annually takes in between $450,000 and $500,000 in revenues, but doesn’t net much, Taylor said, because expenses are right up there, also. Expenses include food, housing, dome rental and staffing.
“It’s more about the exposure and just being able to host the event,” Taylor said, who in addition said the community’s hotel and restaurant sector benefit significantly.
