LAMOURE — Players from the LaMoure and Lisbon Legion baseball teams went after pride on Sunday.
After all, both teams had already clinched a spot in Wednesday’s Class B state tournament in LaMoure.
And though Lisbon won the undefeated game on Friday, it was LaMoure that rallied to the championship game and beat Lisbon 2-1 in eight innings on Saturday and 6-5 on Sunday to claim the Section 2 championship.
LaMoure entered the season knowing it would play in the state tournament, as the host team is automatically reserved a spot. Because Section 2’s champion is the host, runner-up Lisbon goes in place to represent the section.
LaMoure meets Section 6 champion Garrison in the final game of the day, while Lisbon squares off against Section 4 champion and baseball juggernaut Grafton in the second game. Official times have not yet been announced.
Lisbon had an early 3-1 lead after the first inning on Saturday, but LaMoure responded with four runs in the second. Lisbon came back with two more to tie it in the third until LaMoure scored the eventual winning run in the sixth.
The game started on Saturday, but was suspended until Sunday because of rain in the bottom of the fourth. LaMoure reliever Brady Thielges got the win, while Lisbon’s Trent Toso took the loss.
Tanner Carlson had two hits to lead LaMoure.
A dramatic run-scoring double from Beau Diegel in the bottom of the eighth inning helped LaMoure stave off elimination in the first championship game on Saturday.
Diegel also threw well from the hill, earning the win by going all eight innings and allowing no earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Lisbon’s Hunter Mairs was also impressive, pitching all eight innings. He surrendered two runs on six hits, walking five and striking out seven in the loss.
