Alissa Langbehn of Jamestown Girl Scout Troop 30576 recently completed the Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.
For her project, she took 28 plastic barrels and turned them into recycling bins for the Stutsman County Fairgrounds.
Butler Machinery of Jamestown with the help of Bill VanEpps provided the barrels. Dan Kapp at RM Stoudt helped clean the excess oil from the barrels. They were then painted white and navy blue and set up around the fairgrounds and Jamestown Speedway in pairs — one of each pair for aluminum cans, and one per pair for bottles.
Local 4-H clubs are looking after the barrels and collected the recyclables. The funds generated from recycling will go to the clubs’ future projects.
Debra Hatlewick was Langbehn’s project adviser and Marcia Cofield is her Girl Scout leader. Langbehn will be a senior at Jamestown High School this fall.
