McDougalls speak on trip at Kiwanis; new member inducted

Don Bentz introduced Ken and Rosemary McDougall to speak on their mission trip to Guatemala at the Kiwanis Club’s noon luncheon meeting July 23 at the Lantern Room.

The McDougalls went on the mission trip in January 2011. They went because Ken’s brother and sister-in-law had gone before and asked them to go along this time. Guatemala is the about the size of Tennessee and the population is 13 million — 41 percent of them live in poverty. They said it was a beautiful country but they don’t take care of it. There is litter everywhere.

Ken, who has had a dental practice in Jamestown since 1981, worked on extracting teeth and the first day he saw 30 patients and did 70 extractions. He said the line went on and on. The last day he saw 54 people and did 110 extractions. He said the amount of tooth decay was phenomenal. He felt they needed to have education on eating and how to take care of their teeth. They eat tremendous amounts of sugar.

Tim Burchill led the meeting attended by 19 members. Don and Sharon Caine led the group singing and “Happy Dollars” were collected by Eric Tuchscher for Camp Rokiwan. A card was passed around to sign for Richard Proudfit, Kids Against Hunger, to congratulate him on winning the Jefferson Award.

Dr. Alissa Hanson, a new dentist who joined Dr. Ken McDougall’s practice, was a guest. Jeff Wiedenmeyer, pastor of First Assembly of God Church, was inducted into Kiwanis.
