Carlson speaks on WFO at Rotary

Bakken shared “thank-you” notes from students who attend the RYLA Camp (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). He also announced the date for Camp Rokiwan is Aug. 12-16 and that air conditioning units are still needed.
For the program Mike Smyth introduced Robert L. Carlson, president of the World Farmers’ Organisation, headquartered in Rome, Italy. WFO is a federation of national farm organizations. There are 50 countries involved and about 60 farm organizations.
Carlson said the agriculture industry is linked worldwide through food production, distribution, purchasing and selling of agricultural equipment. This is the reason for WFO.
The demand for food production grows by 219,000 people per day. By 2050 meat and cereal production will have to increase by 60 percent. The main problem is developing countries will have to greatly increase their ability to produce food. WFO is a key component in helping to look at the problems and work with countries and farm organizations to solve the issues, Carlson said. Its website is www.wfo-oma.org
