ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Former Northern State University men’s basketball coach Don Meyer is having surgery this week to implant a heart pacemaker.

University officials tell the American News that Meyer had heart problems Sunday night, leading to the decision. Last week, doctors replaced three of Meyer’s heart valves with mechanical ones and repaired a hole in his heart.

Meyer has been battling cancer since it was discovered following a 2008 car accident that cost him part of his left leg.

Meyer retired from coaching in 2010 with an NCAA record 923 victories.
