Letter to the editor: Rick Berg would serve N.D. well in the U.S. Senate

Rep. Rick Berg would serve North Dakotans well as a U.S. senator. He has made an excellent accounting of himself in the House and personifies the traits necessary to represent our state — conservatism, hard work and willingness to listen. Unlike President Barack Obama, he has worked for a living and has helped create jobs. The current president has proven to be an angry, divisive leader who wants bigger government, higher taxes and more entitlements. Heidi Heitkamp espouses the same agenda, including favoring the disastrous health bill recently enacted.
Have we learned anything from the economic woes of European countries? Their bloated federal workforces, low productivity, and entitlements have bankrupted Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy. California, controlled by the Democratic Party, is a big version of Greece. Several of its cities, including Stockton and San Bernardino, are bankrupt.
Now is the time to address our unfunded obligations in Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and exorbitant retirement benefits of federal workers, lest we suffer the same fate as Europe. Heitkamp claims to be an independent voice but will follow the lead of Sen. Harry Reid and Obama. Berg realizes we cannot spend or tax our way out of our economic problems. He will receive my vote.
