Tanner Carlson pitched LaMoure into the winner’s bracket of the Class B state Legion tournament on Wednesday night.

The Post 19 right-hander fired a five-hit shutout as the host team won the final game of the night at Townsend Field, 3-0 over Garrison.

Carlson was never in trouble, carving up the Garrison lineup. He walked just one and registered nine strikeouts.

LaMoure, which faces Grafton tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the second semifinal game, scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth.

Chris Heinrich’s single into right field scored Zach Stemen and Beau Diegel to put Post 19 up 2-0. Later in the inning with Carlson on third, Kenny Hodem dropped down a squeeze bunt for the third run of the frame.

That’s all the Carlson needed as he sailed through all seven innings.

Stemen and Heinrich each had two hits for LaMoure off Garrison pitcher Matt Landenberger.

Other first-round winners were Wahpeton, Grafton and Washburn.

Wahpeton 1, Casselton 0

With 39 victories coming into the North Dakota Division II American Legion baseball state tournament, wins have not been hard to come by for Wahpeton.

But on Wednesday, Post 20 had to battle to pick up a 1-0 victory against two-time defending state champion Casselton.

A scoreless pitchers’ duel ensued for the first five innings between starting pitchers Ellery Bresnahan of Casselton and Jeremy Bontjes of Wahpeton.

That changed when Wahpeton second basemen Ethan Meide stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. Meide lined a base hit to left field to drive in Bontjes for the only run of the game.

Bontjes walked one batter and allowed just four hits.

“He is a bulldog,” Wahpeton coach Chris Kappes said. “He has ice in his veins. He’s a pure athlete.”

Grafton 4, Lisbon 3 (9)

Grafton won Game 2 of the day, getting the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Jaime Villareal went all nine frames on the mound for Grafton, which led 3-1 until Lisbon tied it with two runs in the top of the seventh to force extras.

Christian Lunde and Zach Suda each had two hits to lead Post 41 in victory.

Lisbon was paced by Dylan Urbach, who had two hits.

Derek Lyons was the tough-luck loser on the mound. Lyons registered 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.

Washburn 10, Velva 4

Washburn had the lone comfortable win of the day, beating Velva by six runs.

Washburn smacked four doubles as part of a 14-hit attack. Michael Hausauer and Kirk Sailer each collected three hits.

Sailer also was effective on the mound, working around six walks and four hits, but did notch five strikeouts.
