Before they won it Sunday, the Jamestown Tarno Townies needed a big rally Saturday.
Down 6-0 with three innings left against Fairmount, the Townies rallied to win their opening game at the Class AA state amateur baseball tournament.
After coming from behind in Game 1, Mike Rerick pitched Jamestown into the title game later in the day.
The Fargo Jays knocked out defending Class AA champion Enderlin, which was unable to cash in several scoring opportunities.
Jamestown 10, Fairmount 7 (8)
It wasn’t pretty, but the Tarno Townies won their opener on Saturday.
Jamestown scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning, which erased a 7-0 deficit as they outlasted Fairmount 10-7 in eight innings.
The game featured 15 walks and nine errors.
Fairmount came apart late, committing three of its five errors and walking three more in Jamestown’s 6-run sixth inning.
Cory Anderson stabilized a ragged start on the mound for the Tarno Townies. He took over with Jamestown down 4-0, but allowed just three runs over the next six innings.
Anderson also delivered the game-winning hit with a two-run single in the top of the eighth to break the 7-all tie. Anderson, Sam Joseph and Steve Hockert each had two hits. Anderson drove in three. The Townies also drew eight walks.
Wylie Wisnewski had two of Fairmount’s five hits.
Enderlin 6, Kindred 0
After a long first game Saturday, Logan Midthun did his best to get things back on schedule.
The Enderlin left-hander sailed through seven innings, twirling a 4-hit shutout in the 1-hour and 26-minute 6-0 blanking of Kindred.
Midthun allowed only four singles. He did not walk or hit a batter and fanned four.
Enderlin scored one in the bottom of the second before Pat Adair basically put it out of reach with a 2-run single in the bottom of the third to make it 4-0. Adair finished with two of the Indies’ seven hits. Kevin Bratland scored two runs.
Jared Beto had two of Kindred’s four hits.
Midthun, who won his third straight start in state amateur tournament games, did not allow a runner past first base in the game.
Jamestown 5, Valley City 1
Rerick had the dark one working in the Townies’ second win Saturday.
The Jamestown left-hander struck out 15 Valley City batters in a 5-1.
The Townies didn’t do much offensively. They didn’t get their first hit until the top of the seventh inning. But Valley City pitcher Jesse Brooks walked nine batters and the play behind him was shaky too as Valley City committed five errors.
Matt Tompkins’ double in the top of the seventh inning was the Townies’ first hit. Nico Moreno walked three times and scored twice. Rerick didn’t have a hit, but drove in two.
Fargo 6, Enderlin 2
Fargo advanced thanks to a Houdini act on the mound.
Enderlin left the bases loaded in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, scoring just once over the stretch.
Fargo pitcher Dylan Deavy was constantly in trouble, but was able to wiggle off the hook. He went 5 1/3 innings, walking nine and giving up seven hits, but only two runs.
Matt Fiechtner had another big game offensively for Fargo, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cole Hanl added two hits, including a two-run single in the top of the first inning.
Taran Langland had two hits for Enderlin, but the defending Class AA champions left 13 runners on base in the game.
