Even with some struggles at the top, the Jamestown High School girls golf team sits in a manageable spot after the first day of the Lifetime Vision Source East-West Classic.
Sierra Bennion led the Blue Jays with an 87 and Maria LeFevre added a 90 to help Jamestown to a first-day score of 417 Monday at the Jamestown Country Club. The Jays sit in ninth place out of 15 teams. The tournament concludes today, with action starting at 8 a.m.
“We are very happy with that position,” Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said. “Our seventh-graders did a great job.”
Bennion is tied with Bismarck Century’s Annie Nelson for 14th, while LeFevre is tied for 16th with Minot’s Haili Duchscherer.
Fargo Davies’ Allyson Meyer and Fargo South’s Cassidy St. Germain shot 79s to lead the pack. Davies had four scorers inside the top 10. In third is Davies’ Kathleen Marsh (80), while West Fargo’s Ashley Bixby, Davies’ Jennifer Marsh and Dickinson’s Rachel Jahner are tied for fourth with 82s.
Davies’ success gave it a commanding lead, as the 325 is 22 strokes ahead of Fargo North. Bismarck Century (358), Dickinson (386) and Grand Forks Red River (389) rounded out the top five, respectively.
Jamestown is 10 strokes behind Bismarck High, but eight strokes ahead of Mandan. Though it may not have made much of a difference in the team score, Kraft said Bennion didn’t have her best day.
“She had a little trouble off the tee today,” Kraft said. “She was pushing shots to the right and getting into trouble. I think she was pretty disappointed with her score.”
Still, Kraft said he expects her to contend for the best scores on the second day.
“Last year at state, she ran into some difficulty, and came out the second day and shot the third best score of the day,” Kraft said. “She’ll throw that away and be ready to go.”
LeFevre was just 5-over par after the front nine, but Kraft said she ran into some hurdles on the back.
“She had a couple of errant shots,” Kraft said. “She had about three holes in a row where her score kind of ballooned.”
Mara LeFevre shot a 119 for Jamestown, while teammates Kaitlin Mullowney (121), Sarah Azure (124) and Ashlyn Weis (154) finished behind her, respectively.
