Stutsman Development Corp. board of directors learned that three companies have shown interest in the Spiritwood Energy Park Association during its regular meeting Monday. SEPA is the industrial park located near Great River Energy’s Spiritwood Station coal-fired generating plant and the Cargill Malt.

Connie Ova, CEO of JSDC, said she could not release the identities of any of the prospective companies. She said the most likely possibility was a large natural gas and water user that relied heavily on rail transportation.

“It is a significant amount of property they are looking at,” she said. “We could possibly see a decision by fall. This project is bigger than we thought in our wildest dreams.”

Ova said the project may become the first in the SEPA industrial park if it breaks ground before the planned December groundbreaking of Dakota Spirit AgEnergy plant.

Dakota Spirit AgEnergy is a hybrid ethanol plant with a planned 75-million gallon per-year capacity. It is currently awaiting approval by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The SEPA industrial park is a partnership between the JSDC and Great River Energy and includes a rail loop providing access to the BNSF Railway mainline. Businesses located within the park could receive waste steam from the Spiritwood Station generating plant once it comes online.
