Darlene VanderVorst, district lieutenant governor of Kiwanis, spoke at the Kiwanis Club’s noon luncheon meeting Aug. 6 at the Lantern Room.
VanderVorst had previously been the district lieutenant governor and was asked to fill in a six-month term for a person who was unable to fulfill the responsibility in the position.
VanderVorst said she is dedicated to going to various clubs in the region and seeing what’s going on to help serve children.
For some years now, Kiwanis has had a major goal of increasing membership and she said that there was a slight increase this past year so she feels it is coming back.
Kiwanis was founded in 1915 and will soon be celebrating 100 years. She said that there are many members in Kiwanis, but how many people actually are involved in Kiwanis? It is different to just come to meetings each week or to really get involved to help children. She went over the Kiwanis International objectives.
Tim Burchill led the meeting attended by 18 members. Don and Sharon Caine led the group singing and Kenrad Pederson collected Happy Dollars. On a challenge from Rotary, it was decided to give the “Happy Dollars” for the month of August to the “Stuff the Bus” program for school supplies for children in need in Jamestown.
Everyone was reminded of the auction at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Camp Rokiwan for the Eliminate Project.
The next meeting of Aug. 20 will be a noon luncheon at the Lantern Room. The program will be announced at a later date.
