Bryan Erstad's towering solo home run to right field in the bottom of the 13th inning ended a marathon opener to the Class AAA state amateur baseball tournament.
Erstad's blast lifted the Merchants to a 2-1 13-inning win over the Fargo Expos Friday night at Jack Brown Stadium.
Sam and Steve Hirchert allowed just one run over 13 innings on the mound for the Merchants, who advanced to Saturday's winner's-bracket game at 2:30 p.m.
Nick Tweiten pitched 12 great innings for the Expos.
