Elks top Groton; face Merchants Saturday

The Jamestown Elks cruised into winner's bracket play with a 9-0 win over Groton, S.D., in the second game of the Class AAA state amateur baseball tournament on Friday night.

The Jamestown Elks cruised into winner's-bracket play with a 9-0 win over Groton, S.D., in the second game of the Class AAA state amateur baseball tournament on Friday night.

Elks pitcher Paul Roers fired a three-hit shutout on the mound. He allowed just three hits and retired the last 13 batters he faced as the Elks ended it early by the 9-run rule with a 7-0 lead after seven innings. Roers also struck out 10 batters.

Jeremy Newman had three hits to lead the Elks, including a double. Boya Quichocho added two hits and two stolen bases for the Elks, who have won the last three Class AAA state tournaments.

The Elks and Merchants meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Groton and the Fargo Expos play at noon in a loser-out game.
