Abandoned Minot homes may face demolition
Health officials in the Minot area are looking into how many damaged houses have been abandoned following the historic Souris River flooding last summer. Those that have been deserted stand to be razed for health and safety reasons.
MINOT (AP) — Health officials in the Minot area are looking into how many damaged houses have been abandoned following the historic Souris River flooding last summer. Those that have been deserted stand to be razed for health and safety reasons.
The city earlier reported about 280 houses throughout the river valley left untouched since the 2011 flood. The First District Health Unit is investigating how many have truly been abandoned.
Environmental Health Director Jim Heckman told the Minot Daily News that a number of people have notified officials that they are rebuilding or trying to sell their homes. He said fewer than 50 people have failed to reply to First District’s notice of potential demolition.
City Finance Director Cindy Hemphill said property owners will be billed for the cost of demolition.
