Deported man pleads guilty

BISMARCK (AP) — A 37-year-old man from Mexico has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to re-entering the country after being deported.
Osbaldo Carrillo-Peralta was arrested April 18 while a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for a traffic violation in Mercer County, North Dakota. U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon said Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials discovered that Carrillo-Peralta is a Mexican citizen and had entered the country illegally.
Carrillo-Peralta previously had been deported twice from the U.S. — first in 1998 after he was convicted in Texas of discharging a firearm at individuals, and again in 2010 after a conviction of cocaine possession.
Purdon said the federal sentence imposed sends a message to others who are illegally entering the country.
