Two singles wins and another in doubles left the Blue Jays just short of their first win of the season.

Jamestown hosted Bismarck in a non-conference meet on Tuesday on a sweltering afternoon at Bolinger Courts.

Ben Harris and Landon Dallmann each registered singles wins, while Nate Soulis and Nick Fuchs got one in doubles, but the Demons won two of three doubles contests to edge out the 4-3 win.

“It’s a good way to get more matches in and it’s non-conference so there isn’t as much at stake, but it’s still good for the kids to get out there and play,” said JHS coach Pat Mullowney.

The Demons are strong at the top of the lineup, while the strength of the JHS roster is its depth.

“We got 10, 12 kids that are pretty solid and they showed that today,” Mullowney said. “Ben and Landon getting a couple big wins was really good to see. Then Soulis and Fuchs getting that win in doubles was really nice.”

Harris steamrolled Jonathan Wagner 6-1, 6-3, while Dallmann had even less trouble with Dominik Fettig 1 and 0.

Soulis and Fuchs had a competitive first set, but rolled in the second to close it out, 6-2.

Declan O’Higgins and Ashton Johnson went to a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, but couldn’t quite finish it off.

“Matches like this allow you to throw some different combinations out there and see what clicks,” Mullowney said. “Bismarck is a solid team, but we feel like we’re improving and still building.”

The Blue Jays are back into West Region action on the road at Bismarck Century Thursday before hosting Fargo South on Friday.
