Morningside routs VCSU

Morningside (Iowa) flexed its No. 8 ranking in its home opener Thursday night, beating Valley City State 49-7.

The perennial powers out of the GPAC had little trouble with the Vikings, who opened the season ranked 17th.

Derek Elliott, the Valley City High School product, scored VCSU’s lone touchdown on a 1-yard dive in the third quarter.

Morningside outgained the Vikings, 428-244. VCSU quarterback Tommy Zinke threw for 194 yards on 15 of 32 passing. The Vikings punted seven times.

The Vikings play at home for the first time Sept. 8 against Mayville State.
