The Blue Jays 8-1 loss to Fargo South Friday afternoon did not tell the whole tail.
Outside of the Bruins 1-2 tandem at the top of Davis Lawley and David Youngs, the Blue Jays were in every other match, but couldn’t quite seal the deal.
“You’ve got to be able to finish and we’re not doing it right now,” said JHS coach Pat Mullowney. “We have kids that haven’t played a lot of matches and they’re figuring it out as they go.
“It’s a learning process. There were a lot of good things happening out there today. The kids are getting experience and there’s no substitute for that.”
Nick Fuchs delivered the Blue Jays’ lone win. The sophomore took the opening set, dropped the second and then showed some backbone with a hard-fought 10-8 win in the third over Brett Schulz at No. 6 singles.
“That was a nice win for Nick. He’s been a good contributor and you know with Nick you’re always going to get his best effort,” Mullowney said.
Jonny Satrom split his first two sets at No. 3 singles, but fell 10-6 in a tight tiebreak.
Nate Soulis went to a first set tiebreak at 5 singles, but Charlie Beske won out.
Nick Watne and Johnson had the same scenario play out in at No. 2 doubles, falling 7-6 (2), 6-1. Fuchs and Soulis took nine games at No. 3 doubles, but fell in straights.
“We can’t quite get over the hump in some of these matches. We’re right there in a lot of cases,” Mullowney said. “As the season keeps moving forward our hope is that we’re learning lessons and when the time comes we’ll be able to put ourselves in a position where we can turn the tables in these close matches and have them go our way.”
The Blue Jays play at home again Thursday when they host Bismarck Century in a nonconference match.
