The Jimmies were not at their best over the weekend, yet they continued to pile up the wins.
Despite playing three shaky matches out of four, according to coach Jon Hegerle, Jamestown College swept through the field Friday and Saturday at the Dakota Wesleyan Labor Day Classic in Mitchell, S.D.
The Jimmies swept the host Tigers late Friday night and then dropped just one of seven sets on Saturday in wins over York College and Mount Marty.
There’s never a need to apologize for wins, but there was room for improvement.
“I felt like the first three matches we weren’t completely ready to play and that was disappointing,” Hegerle said. “The last match against Mount Marty, we played extremely well. But the previous three matches we didn’t have the sense of urgency you need to have each match and that’s something we still need to work on, clearly.”
Of the four wins, the opener Friday against NCAA Division II may have been the most impressive, or at least the most difficult.
The Jimmies trailed 2-0, only to rally to win three straight to steal it. The Cougars were the bigger and more athletic team, Hegerle said, and it turned into a 5-set doozy.
“The girls have proven through the early part of the season that they don’t ever really throw in the towel,” Hegerle said. “But putting yourself in a hole is a dangerous way to operate and something we want to avoid.”
Hegerle was hoping for a crisper start on Saturday, but the Jimmies dropped the opening set to York (Neb.), although that was the only one they lost all day.
Whenever they were in trouble, Kaitlyn Rogalla seemed to deliver a big kill. The senior from Moorhead put down a team-leading 31 kills and hit over .400.
“She was a real force for us all weekend,” Hegerle said. “She was pretty unstoppable. When you’re hitting in that .400 range, that’s very good.”
Sarah Becker hit over .300 and had 26 kills and 15 blocks in the final three matches. Katie Zent hit over .200 with 28 kills.
Freshman Alaina Brown also had another impressive showing. The Bloomington, Minn., product stuffed the stat sheet with 12 kills, 3 aces, 31 digs and 6 blocks.
“She has a very high volleyball IQ,” Hegerle said. “She’s played pretty consistently for us and has had a nice impact on our team.”
Hegerle also singled out defensive specialist Beth Segerholm’s work against heavy-hitting Sioux Falls on Friday.
“They had an outside hitter with a canon of an arm. … Beth stuck in there against some balls that were hit very hard and defended our court,” he said.
The Jimmies, now 8-2 on the season, play their first home match Wednesday when they host Mayville State at 7 p.m. at the Hansen Center.
Also of note this week, the first in-season NAIA polls will be released on Tuesday.
