BUCYRUS, N.D. (AP) — A Japanese company is building a new grain elevator in southwestern North Dakota.
The elevator will be able to store 1 million bushels of grain. The Mitsui company hopes to have it finished in time for next year’s summer harvest.
North Dakota Wheat Commission marketing director Jim Peterson said North Dakota already sells 24 million bushels of hard red spring wheat to Japan each year.
The new elevator will handle 110-car unit trains of grain. It will compete with two farmer-owned cooperatives in the region, the Scranton Equity Exchange and Southwest Grain.
Southwest Grain division manager Jim Bobb told the Bismarck Tribune the new elevator will help the Japanese company get the wheat it needs.
