ND school credits oil boom with enrollment gain
Grafton school officials say enrollment is growing thanks to North Dakota's oil boom on the opposite side of the state.
GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) — Grafton school officials say enrollment is growing thanks to North Dakota's oil boom on the opposite side of the state.
The Grand Forks Herald reports that enrollment in the Grafton Public Schools is rising after a decline of more than 40 years. Superintendent Jack Maus says Grafton's first-day enrollment this year was 895 students, up 62 from last year.
The gain in students in the northeastern North Dakota city is linked to an increase in jobs. Many of those jobs are at Diverse Energy Systems, which makes storage tanks for the oil sites in the western part of the state.
Maus says some Grafton residents commute to jobs in the oil fields, which opens up their previous jobs in Grafton for newcomers.
