RR will cut grass along ND track after city asks

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will cut overgrown grass and weeds along its track after officials in the western North Dakota city of Belfield complained that the vegetation is creating a fire danger.

BELFIELD, N.D. (AP) — Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will cut overgrown grass and weeds along its track after officials in the western North Dakota city of Belfield complained that the vegetation is creating a fire danger.

The Dickinson Press reports that Belfield City Auditor Cindy Ewoniuk mailed a letter to BNSF's property tax department in Fort Worth, Texas, a month ago after people living near the tracks complained.

Ewoniuk says the weeds and tall grass are not attractive, and sparks from passing trains could cause a fire.

BNSF official Amy McBeth says she has contacted a railroad official in the area, and he has notified the city that the foliage will be cut.
