1887 – 125 Years Ago

The Globe’s write up of the town Saturday was the talk of everybody. Three columns of valuable space in that great metropolitan journal, for Jamestown, is quite complimentary. But the paper is ceaslessly enterprising and such things are getting to be expected. Another thing about the Globe is that the interests of all classes are represented in its columns, and all classes read the paper. It’s everybody’s paper.

1912 – 100 Years Ago

Jamestown College

Re-opened Today

This was registration day at Jamestown College, devoted to enrollment of the students, and the campus and college buildings were again enlivened by the returning students, while the incoming freshmen diffidently walked about and acquainted himself with his new “Alma Mater.” There was a big reunion of the old students, and many new faces were seen in both faculty and student body. The present indications assure that this will be the best year that Jamestown College has ever enjoyed, with attendance between 225 and 250.

The most marked change upon the campus since college closed last June, is the new Library Hall, fast approaching completion: one of the handsomest buildings of the college group. It is located between the ed, 13x38 feet in size: chemistry and biological science rooms have been finished, and a recitation room added, and about $1,000 expended in new equipment.

1937 – 75 Years Ago

Annual Shrine Circus and “Products Day” to be Held

in City Sept. 20, 21, 22

September 20, 21, and 22 will be big days in Jamestown when the Shrine Circus will be here at the Jamestown Park Auditorium. The facilities for putting on the circus are so much better at the new auditorium that Shrine officials expect the performance to be at least 100 percent better, with more acts, thrills, etc., then ever shown before.

About sixty Jamestown firms will give prizes to farmers in the Jamestown trade territory on September 20, 21 and 22, for the best exhibits of grains, vegetables, butter, canned goods and baked goods.

A revival of the “Products Day” sponsored by the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce will be held during the Shrine Circus and Fall Festival days announced by the Shrine Club and the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Vacancy On Dem Ticket

The vacancy on the Democratic-NPL legislative ticket in the County caused by the resignation of Jack Martin, Spiritwood, because of his serious illness, is filled, according to Robert Grabinger, Stutsman County Democratic-NPL Chairman.

Grabinger said Mrs. Stanley Prodzinksi of Buchanan has agreed to run for the State House of Representatives on the Democratic-NPL ticket.

Some came because they are auction addicts, a few were serious collectors or antique dealers, but all were bidding on a bit of history to take home.

Sorting bins, tables, chairs, key cabinets and canvas mail baskets on wheels – post office equipment from the 1929 building on First Avenue – were sold at auction Wednesday evening.

Since the building was closed in November 1984, there has been much speculation about the fate of the old post office. That is still in limbo, but the sale of some of the equipment was an opportunity for people to witness and take part in something tangible.
