Both JC teams in first place after first day

The Jamestown College men’s and women’s golf teams set themselves up well in first-round action of the Valley City State University Invite on Sunday afternoon at Maple River Golf Course in Mapleton.

Tommy Rockis leads the pack with a 72, and Jack Bietz and Tyler Baukol each shot a 78 to sit in a tie for third place. Their team is out front with 308 strokes after the first day. The Jimmies lead Valley City State by 13 strokes and third-place Dickinson State by 27.

Also scoring for the Jimmies was Kameron Hunter, who logged an 80. Chris Rochon wasn’t far off the pace with an 83, but only the top four are counted in team scores.

The women hold an even bigger lead behind with a 365, 33 strokes ahead of Dickinson State and 37 in front of Valley City State.

“Our women played extremely well, especially our 1-3 players,” JC coach Dustin Jensen said.

Freshman Ashley Barnhart shot an 85, which puts her in second. Right behind her is Brianna Stein in third with an 88. Beth Ryan is tied for sixth with a 93, and the Jimmies’ fourth score belonged to Chandler Germundson, who finished with a 98.

The two-day tournament heats up against at 9 a.m. today.
