The Jamestown High School boys and girls cross country teams took fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Bill Jansen Blue-White Invite Saturday in Valley City.
Jamestown’s Kyle Schumacher finished 22nd with a time of 18 minutes, 24 seconds to lead the Blue Jays to a team score of 175. Grand Forks Red River posted a 41 to win the meet, while Bismarck Century’s Cataldo DiDonna won the race with a time of 16:41.
Jamestown’s Michael Sorensen took 30th in a time of 18:40, and Aaron Ford and Phil Manley were 38th and 40th, respectively. Kyle Gee, at 45th, rounded out the Blue Jays’ scoring.
“Top to bottom, I was real pleased with the way the runners performed,” JHS coach Ken Gardner said. “One thing that really helped us ... our top five were all really packed in there within a minute of each other.”
Lisbon’s Jacob Gallagher fared well in the mixed field of Class A and B teams, taking ninth in 17:32. His teammate, Justin Warling, was 33rd.
The Jamestown girls, who are still without standout Alison Allmer because of personal issues, ended with a 245, led by Maya Moltzen’s 24th-place finish. She ran a 17:12. Rachel Morin was 36th and Ligia Schultz took 41st. Grand Forks Central had the meet-winning score with a 53. Langdon’s Kennedy Rude was the fastest on the day, finishing in 16:03.
“Our top three runners (Moltzen, Morin, Schultz) are running times faster than the times they ran at the state meet last year,” Gardner said. “They seem to be performing well at this point.”
Tess Scott of Barnes County North was 15 seconds behind the leader, placing fifth. Leah Oien of Griggs County was eighth with a 16:38, while Carrington’s Ann Endres tied for 10th with a 16:44.
The Blue Jays are back in action Saturday when they go to the Bismarck Invite, which will take place at McDowell Dam outside of Bismarck.
