Letter to the editor: Berg has to prove himself by getting farm bill passed

It is very important that they pass a farm bill in that time frame. If they don’t, farm families across North Dakota will feel the impacts because a farm bill in 2013 isn’t going to look anything like the one the Senate passed in 2012 that Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., helped craft. It will be much weaker.

Rep. Rick Berg, R-N.D., claims we should elect him to the U.S. Senate because he has been so effective in the U.S. House. Yet he hasn’t been able to get his colleagues to budge an inch on passing this farm bill — the single most important piece of legislation to his home state.

If Berg fails, and we get stuck with a farm bill extension until 2013, farmers around here can prepare themselves for a significant hit to their safety net thanks in part to the ineffectiveness of their own representative, Berg.
