Optimist Club honors athletes

Jamestown High School’s Abby Wanzek and Michael Sorenson, along with Jamestown College’s Samantha Goff and George Gauld, were all honored as athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Jamestown High School’s Abby Wanzek and Michael Sorenson, along with Jamestown College’s Samantha Goff and George Gauld, were all honored as athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Wanzek, a senior diver on the Blue Jay swimming and diving team, placed second at the Bismarck Invite last Saturday out of 39 divers. Wanzek also qualified for state during the event.

Sorensen, a senior on the Blue Jay boys cross country team, was the No. 2 Jamestown finisher at the Blue-White Invitational cross country meet held in Valley City on Saturday. In contributing to his team’s fifth-place finish out of 23 teams, Sorensen covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 40 seconds and placed 30th out of 108 runners.

Goff, a freshman on the Jimmies women’s cross country team, was the leading runner for the Jimmies for the second straight meet, finishing 10th in the Wiley Wilson Invitational in Minot on Friday.

Goff, from Danvers, Minn., ran her first 5,000-meter race in 20:14 in a field that included 51 runners.

Gauld, a sophomore on the Jimmie men’s soccer team, scored two goals each in a 4-0 win over Dordt and a 6-1 victory over Briar Cliff. Gauld, from Epsom, England, now has five goals on the season as the Jimmies improved to 8-0.
