BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers are going over budget estimates that predict the state's general fund will have a $1.6 billion budget surplus by June.
The Legislature's Budget Section is getting a briefing on the numbers Thursday.
The Budget Section includes members of the North Dakota House and Senate appropriations committees.
House Appropriations Chairman Jeff Delzer of Underwood says he's hoping the numbers aren't too optimistic. He says previous surplus estimates have turned out to be accurate.
The numbers count on a continuing increase in North Dakota's oil production.
The state is now producing about 674,000 barrels a day. The budget estimates assume production will rise to about 850,000 barrels a day within two years.
